Parents and education stakeholders have been called upon to encourage the girl child to take up science subjects.
Kiambu Education officer James Koigi said that parents are key in influencing girls to take science subjects and courses.
He noted that parents are better placed to break the misconceptions that girls cannot withstand science subjects.
“Parents need to play an active role in doing away with the culture that portrays girls as inferior such as thinking that sciences are meant for men. Telling your girls they can make it is the first step of making them believe in themselves,” he said.
He added that mentoring the girl child to take science subjects will inspire them to take the subjects at the secondary level and increase their enrollment at the university level.
He mentioned that the female gender has in the past been reluctant in taking up courses that entails science and mathematics at the university level the likes of engineering, actuarial and Biochemistry courses.
Koigi advised them to go for the subject for an equitable and secure sustainable future as they are as good as their male counterparts.
He also urged science teachers to take part in mentoring the children into loving the subjects so as to avoid future lack of good female science teachers and practitioners.
