The rising number of arson attacks in secondary schools has stunned the country with many theoring in an attempt to explain the cause of the wave of fires.
Ranging from fear of exams, indiscipline, financial pressure, lack of satisfaction with the feeding programme, poor parenting and lots of other explanations.
However, the Kenya National Parents Association secretary general Musau Ndunda has a different perspective.
According to the statement sent to newsroom,Ndunda proposes a total overhaul in the education sector.
Referring to the recent directive by education CS Fred Matiangi compelling parents to pay for damages incurred in student fires, Ndunda claims the ministry is ill advised in its directive.
According to the gazetted guidelines on secondary school fees, it emerges that all schools have an allocated amount to insurance and property claims that should cover the cost incurred during such occurrences.
However, the monies allocated to cover the insurance per student per year for boarding schools totals to Sh1,600 and Sh1,300 for day schools which inturn totals to a droplet in comparison to the oceanic damage witnessed.
Ndunda also faults the school administration for lack of coherent and focused structures when dealing with students sentiments he shares with the education CS.
Going forward, Ndunda predicts more episodes in the arson wave unless the ministry incorporates recommendations of past committees that investigated unrest in schools asserting that there is need to rethink boarding schools altogether.
To date at least 75 schools have been torched with many asking the question, when will this unrest end?
