Parents with children in boarding secondary schools have been told to pick them following the countrywide teachers strike. The chairman of the Nakuru Parents Association, a subsidiary of the national organisation of parents Sammy Waititu, while addressing members of the association at Teachers Primary School yesterday, urged parents to get hold of their children’s security as the government and teachers were busy engrossed in the strike. According to Waititu parents should count loses but ensure their children are safe in their hands. He observed that the school children were experiencing loneliness and idleness hence insecurity could arise. “I advise parents who had released their children to boarding schools to report to school to recall them for security purposes. This strike is far from ending and it is better for parents to have their children safe in their hands. Many things might happen as these children are lonely and idle," he said. Waititu observed that the school children may be tempted to indulge in alcohol and drug abuse, irresponsible sexual activities and even crime due to idleness and loneliness. The parents’ leader further suggested that the national organisation of parents should petition the government to order school managements to reduce fees amounts once schools re-open. He also advised parents to engage their children in private studies and other constructive activities during the strike period. The teachers strike has since been called off and children asked to report to school on Monday next week.
