A spot check in most private schools in Kisii showed that most students have not reported back to school after school re-opening on Tuesday.

A section of parents in Riana ward Kisii South Sub County said the government’s plan to supply free textbooks to public schools has facilitated the transfers of students.

“No parent will risk taking his or her children joining form one to private schools because the government has offered a free supply of textbooks to all public schools,” said a parent Dickson Omari.

Kennedy Ombati said the government’s directive to give free textbooks to form ones is a big blow to private schools because no student will report to privately owned schools.

According to Ombati, the government should consider supplying the free textbooks to private schools as well.

“Students in private schools are also Kenyans whose parents are voters. The ministry of education should supply textbooks to private learning institutions for the students joining form one to benefit same as those joining public schools,” he added.
