National Parents Association chairperson Nicholas Maiyo has called upon the the government to lower university entry grade to C (plain).
Mr Maiyo says that this will make more students intending to pursue degrees join Universities.
This comes after only 70,073 students qualified to join the 22 public universities, 14 chartered private universities and 13 universities with Letter of Interim Authority (LIA), a total of 49 Universities.
87 percent of candidates who sat for KCSE last year got below C+ Universities entry grade.
Mr Maiyo further urged the state to make entry grade for those who want to pursue diploma courses at universities at C-.
“The Ministry of Education should consider lowering the university entry point for candidates who sat for KCSE in 2017 to enable them be absorbed in universities and colleges,” Maiyo said speaking to the star.
Mr Maiyo says he concerned about the Universities in the country since they risk closure due to poor performance attributed from the results of the last 2 years. He said the Universities rely on parallel programs and and due to lack of self sponsored students, the institutions would not have any way of generating income.
“Most of this universities operate on parallel degree programmes as the main source of income and two years with no self sponsored students means no income generation is happening and it will not be long before you see some of these universities shutting down,” Maiyo said.
Last year, encountered the highest number of grade E, over 35,000 students, Maiyo has urged the state to come up with alternatives for this candidates.
