Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with school heads, area MP Patrick Wainaina said it is unfortunate that despite the government offering free primary and secondary education, a section of parents is yet to take their children to school."Parents should stop frustrating the government's efforts to offer free education to children. I wish to challenge parents in my constituency to take their children who have attained a school going age to be enrolled in the public schools in the region," he said. The MP stated that no student who has completed standard 8 should remain at home due to lack of fees as the government is now offering free secondary education.Wainaina said parents should be blamed for the increased crime in the region, because children who don't go to school have joined criminal gangs and are now terrorising innocent residents who are struggling to make ends meet. "All children must go to school so that we can curb crime in the region. If the move is implemented, there will be no one to join the criminal gangs. Parents need to be vigilant and report any child who doesn’t want to go to school to the police. They will be arrested and be taken to court where he or she will be sent to jail to study," he added.
