Kisumu county parents have been asked to help curb the high dropout rates amongst school going children.

Kisumu county rural gender and sociologist Florence Atera, while speaking at Kisumu hotel, challenged the parents to avoid negligence that is the major cause of school drop outs.

According to the information released, there was a high rate of students’ dropout in Manyatta, Nyalenda and Obunga.

“We need to act as good role models to our infants by instilling parental guidance through discipline orientation,” said Atera.

She further noted that school girls’ pregnancy was on the increase leading to school dropouts, and called upon adults to stop indulging in sexual intercourse with the infants.

“There is a case where a school going child had been impregnated by a motorcycle rider in Manyatta estate,” she observed.

Kisumu peer and counselling officer Ruth Moraa also challenged parents and authority to take full charge of their children by giving them maximum guidance and counselling through training.

Moraa challenged parents not to neglect instilling proper parental guidance to their children as it was necessary for them.
