Deteriorating education standards in Kisii Central sub-county can be addressed if area parents work hand in hand with teachers from the institutions, an education officer has said.

Speaking on Tuesday in her office when she hosted education stakeholders from the area, assistant county commissioner in charge of education, Diana Wekesa said many schools recorded dismal results in national exams due to constant wrangles between teachers and parents.

She urged the two groups to use alternative dispute resolution methods instead of engaging in endless squabbles of management of institutions.

“I must admit that our region hasn’t done well in the last two years at the primary and secondary level. I can say without fear that most parents and school heads in this region are always in crisis over management of the institutions,” she said.

“Shouting at each other or character assassinating someone won’t help. Let us embrace dialogue or negotiations to improve academic standards in our area,” she added.

Her sentiments were supported by education officer Charles Nyaribo, who asked the two groups to seek help from the ministry whenever there was a crisis.

“Institutions belong to the community therefore, it is difficult to ignore parents in governance but above all, let us use amicable approaches in solving such disputes that are apparently jeopardising education standards,” he added.
