Parents with children aged below five years in Kikuyu have been urged to avail them for immunisation against polio when it begins in August.
Speaking at Kikuyu Chief’s Camp on Friday, Dr Albert Mwenje from Kikuyu Hospital, who is a children’s specialist, said polio vaccination was an important government project for the health of children.
He said when children fail to take the vaccine they may end up being affected and fail to walk for the rest of their life adding the disease has no cure.
Dr Mwenje explained that polio is dangerous as it weakens a child’s legs. If the child had began walking, they end up not being able to walk again, he noted.
He said parents should ensure their children below the age of five get the vaccine to avoid being infected with polio.
The medic said children may blame their parents if they grow up with polio since they failed to take the responsibility of ensuring they get the vaccine.
He said the government’s aim is ensuring that children grow up normally.
“There have been some individuals who take advantage to ask for money from residents. We want to tell you that the activity is free and no one should give any coin for the activity,’’ said the doctor.
