Parents and guardians seeking birth certificates for class 8 primary school children in Kisii County, now want the ministry of education to extend the registration deadline.
On Tuesday morning, a long queue of parents waiting to receive the vital document was witnessed at the office of the registrar of persons.
Those that spoke said that the February 20, 2018 deadline wa so near.
"We are sure that most of us will not meet the deadline put by the ministry of Education. It takes one two to three weeks to acquire the document," said Ms Grace Boyani.
She said that her worst fears was that maybe her children might be locked out of registering examinations.
"We also have brokers in this area who are busy taking money from parents decieving them that they could help them get the document," she said.
An officer at the centre who requested for anonymity as he is not required to speak to the media said that the process was slow because it was manual.
"We have been forced to add more personnel to help in the acquiring the process, it's not easy because the whole thing is purely manual," he said.
Area Education Officer Justus Nyariki said the requirement for children to get a unique identifier through the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) had necessitated the jam.
“The new system is meant to capture unique details, their performance and school cash disbursements online, It will also help stakeholders to know the status of education in regard to institution development, equity, quality and efficiency,” said Mr. Nyariki noting that birth certificates were a prerequisite for the registration.
