Kenya National Parents Association Chairman Nicholas Maiyo has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to retain Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi in his new cabinet
He said Matiangi has done a lot in the education sector, therefore, deserves a second chance in the same capacity.
“As parents, we kindly ask President Uhuru Kenyatta not to move CS Matiangi to another ministry since when he took over he has brought reforms which have brought sanity to the education sector. We won’t allow him to be moved into another Ministry,” he said in Eldoret town, Thursday.
“Under his leadership exam cheating has been abolished, there is quality and not quantity learning and students can now access textbooks directly from the government. We want him back in the same capacity for reforms to continue,” he added.
He, however, called upon parents not to pay any fees beyond what is stipulated in the official Ministry of Education fees guidelines.
“I urge parents to only pay what the government has directed them to pay. Don't pay extra fees outside the guidelines. We won’t allow our parents to be exploited by few self-centered principals and parents should report such principals,” he noted.
“According to the Ministry of Education guidelines, the Government will pay Ksh 22,244 per secondary school student in both day and boarding schools. The maximum fees payable for boarding schools will be Ksh 53,000 after a Government subsidy per child, per year,” he added.
