Kenya Parents Association has threatened legal action against any secondary school headteacher who will charge fees higher than the gazetted amount.
Association's national chairman Nicholas Maiyo says schools must be ready to adhere to the new fee guidelines released by the Ministry of Education.
Speaking in Eldoret on Wednesday, Maiyo welcomed the government's move to increase capitation of secondary schools that will see students in day schools learn for free.
He said the move will see over 6 million children who have reached the age of going to school access education as well as increasing to 100 percent the transition rate from primary school to secondary school.
"We are happy that the government has made education affordable to every parent as we will now have the freedom to take our children to a secondary school of our choice knowing that we will only have to pay for food and take care of their personal belongings," Maiyo noted.
"Teachers should be warned that anyone who will go against the new fee guidelines we are parents association will take legal actions as long as the affected parents provide sufficient evidence with us," he added.
In the new fee guidelines for 2018 provided by the Education Principle Secretary Belio Kipsang, the Government will pay Sh22,244 per secondary school student in both day and boarding schools.
This means each day school students will get an additional Sh9,374 on top of the Sh12,870 they receive presently.
The maximum fees payable for boarding schools will be Sh53,000 with National and extra-county schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu and Eldoret being covered under this rate.
Fees for other boarding schools have been set at Sh40,545.
