Parents in Kamenu ward have been warned against not taking their male children to school after completing primary school education.
Speaking at Makongeni shopping centre on Tuesday, Kamenu Community Based Organisation founder and chairperson Esther Mueni said that a number of parents in the area have not been taking their male children to secondary schools after they complete primary education.
"We have noted with a lot of disappointment that some parents have made it a habit of asking their male children to join boda boda business after Class Eight irrespective of how well they perform in their exams. This is a very dangerous trend and we would like to request parents with such habits to desist from it," said Ms Mueni.
She added: "Education is the future for our children and nothing can substitute the role it plays. No parent can claim that they are unable to educate their children when we have bursaries and scholarships everywhere."
Ms Mueni asked authorities to deal strictly with parents who fail to take their children to secondary schools after completing primary education, saying they were going against the kids' right to basic education.
"Our constitution grants children's right to basic education. Denying them secondary school education for boda boda business or other things is contravening their right to education. Let the government crack the whip on such parents as they are encouraging semi-illiteracy among our children," she said.
She further noted that there were also county and village polytechnics, where those students who fail to do well in their national exams can still learn some technical courses.
