The National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) Nyanza Regional Manager Mrs. Easther Okenye, has warned that parents are steadily drugging their children into alcoholism and drug abuse by giving them a lot of cash as pocket money.

Speaking in her office in Kisumu on Monday, Mrs. Okenye said parents must accept blame for doing little or nothing at all, as far as preventing their child from slumping into drug and substance abuse is concerned.

“NACADA officials are in the process of visiting schools, to educate students on the effects of alcohol and drug consumption”, she added.

Mrs. Okenye spoke following a revelation that most students in Secondary Schools in the Country, smoke cigarettes and bhang, besides using other drugs.

According to research carried out by NACADA, 56% of students interviewed across the country confirmed having used various drugs, while 50% admitted having smoked bhang.

The study shows that students easily access drugs at their homes, through friends, fellow students and shops neighboring their schools.

The study revealed that students normally use drugs during weekends and during school trips.
