Members of Parliament affiliated to NASA together with their Jubilee counterparts are set to vet Attorney General nominee.
The coalition led by Raila Odinga has brought forward the names of seven members to the Committee on Appointments which will vet the retired judge Paul Kihara.
The list was presented to the National Assembly on Wednesday. Nasa fronted Esther Passaris (Nairobi), Tom Kajwang' (Ruaraka), Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren), Joshua Kimilu (Kaiti), Getrude Mbeyu (Kilifi) and Oku Kaunya (Teso North) to the committee. Majority leader Aden Duale (Garissa Town) told the House that the committee will vet the nominee effectively. If approved, Kihara will be a member to Uhuru's Cabinet.
The Committee is chaired by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and has automatic members of the Opposition including the Minority leader and the Deputy Minority leader.Minority leader John Mbadi had had last year maintained that the Opposition could not nominate members to the crucial committee “because they did not recognize President Uhuru”.
President Uhuru Kenyatta submitted the nominee's name to Parliament for vetting on Tuesday last week. The reason for Githu's resignation was not established.
Githu took over from Amos Wako in August 2011 following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution that required him to exit office. Wako, who is Busia Senator, had served for two decades as the country’s top legal adviser.
