On February 25, 2016, Machakos university college was closed after students went on rampage following a tribal-based students elections that was characterized by rigging claims.
In March, the university of Nairobi was closed after students set students organization of Nairobi university, SONU's office on fire following a students elections that were characterized by rigging claims.
All these point to a structure that is not clear about elections conducted by students body in our universities and colleges.
It is for these sad and sorry cases that the university (amendment) bill 2015 is now tabled before parliament.
The bill seeks to set a maximum of two years time frame for those elected to stay in office.
I think two years is enough to govern a small body such as those of students organizations like SONU, Moi university students organization, MUSO and others.
The parliament should fast-track to pass the bill so that we bring some sanity in our public universities.
