Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has said Parliament is set to debate an amendment to the Public Health Act that seeks to ban the manufacture and consumption of Shisha in the country.
Duale said medical experts have often cautioned that Shisha smokers absorb high concentration of toxin thus increasing the risk of developing lung cancer and chronic obstructive lung disease, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension, throat cancer among other ailments.
"I will introduce an amendment to the Public Health Act to ban the use, distribution, importation, and manufacturing of Shisha. Kenyans, in general, have welcomed the ban. The interest of the few individuals and businessmen cannot supersede the bigger public health of Kenyans," he said Wednesday.
The outspoken Parliament majority leader said Shisha is ranked among the most dangerous smoke products than cigarettes because of the percentage of nicotine in it adding that flavors make smokers feel that they are inhaling herbal products while they are actually taking tobacco which in return makes them addicted to nicotine.
"We need to ask our selves between few businessmen, club operators and the public, whose interest should the Government serve? The ban on Shisha smoking by the Ministry of Health was as a result of the effects the smokers undergo without notice," he said.
