Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris has criticised the High court ruling that nullified Babu Owino’s election as Embakasi East MP.
Passaris alleged that the court ruling had been predetermined, stating that Babu Owino won the seat fairly in the August 8 election.Speaking at the Milimani Law Courts on Friday, Passaris alleged that certain forces wanted the youthful former student leader to lose the seat.“It does not make sense that the court ordered for a recount of Embakasi East votes where Babu emerged the winner and at the same time claim that the election was marred with widespread errors,” she said.Passaris said that certain forces are against Babu Owino and want to destroy his young political career.“We are going to stand with Babu and ensure that justice is served for the people of Embakasi East,” she added. She said that the former UoN student’s leader has a huge following, adding that forces behind the nullification will be shocked in the by-election.The Nairobi women rep urged Babu and Embakasi East residents to remain calm and strategise on how to get the seat back. She warned the courts against being used to make pre-determined rulings, saying that the rule of law ought to be upheld.High Court Judge Joseph Sergon nullified Babu’s election, saying that the election was marred by widespread errors. The Judge slapped Babu with a Sh5 million fine as the cost of the petition.Babu’s lawyers led by Edwin Sifuna have vowed to appeal the High Court ruling.
