Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris wants investigations into rape allegation at the Kenyatta National Hospital done quickly and those responsible prosecuted.

Passaris said the claims are outdated and such acts in the 21st Century should be taken with utmost seriousness.

Last week claims emerged of a ring of men at the hospital who waylay women who go to breastfeed their newborns and either harass or rape them within the hospital premise.

The allegations triggered mixed reactions on social media with a section of Kenyans calling for the resignation of the hospital's top managers.

"I implore the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to expedite the investigations to ensure that persons responsible for such are punished by the full extent of the law," Passaris said Monday.

"Kenyatta National Hospital and other public medical facilities have to put up stringent security measures to ensure safety and protection of all its patients; both inpatient and outpatients. I reiterate that such occurrences should not be taking place at a health institution."

A patient who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity last week claimed that a patient who had been raped died.

Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu ordered an investigation into the incident and was expected to receive a report on January 22.
