Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to intervene and help clear the Sh28 million worth of patients’ bills at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Passaris who visited the facility on Thursday said most of the patients detained by the hospital due to outstanding bills are unable to pay the cash and may live at the health facility forever.
She spoke after clearing the medical bill of one Mary Wanjiru whose departure the hospital had disallowed because of an outstanding Sh90,000 medical bill.
“As we share in the joy and happiness that this season brings, let us not forget to offer our love and support to fellow brothers and sisters. Today, Mary Wanjiru, a detained patient at the Kenyatta National Hospital, was discharged after I cleared her outstanding medical bill of Sh90,000 and purchased her medication,” she said.
“Afterwards, we escorted her to an emotional reunion with her family in Murera Estate, Juja. Mary Wanjiru's case is among many that I am fighting for.”
I plead with the President of the Republic of Kenya, Governor of Nairobi County and the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health to urgently intervene and ensure that patients detained at Kenyatta National Hospital due to unpaid medical bills that have accumulated to approximately Sh28 million are released before the year ends.”
She said she was ready to team up with the head of state, Nairobi governor, and the health ministry to fundraise and ensure the bills are cleared.
