A passenger bus overturned while trying to overtake a speeding saloon car at Witeithie stage in Juja sub-county on Friday.
The bus that was on its way from Nairobi to Kitui was loaded to capacity when it was involved in the accident, leaving many injured.
Confirming the incident, Thika sub-county traffic police base Commander Francis Muthamia observed that accidents have become so rampant in the area and a nightmare to both his officers and members of the public.
According to witness accounts, the bus was speeding and tried to overtake a fast-moving saloon car when the driver lost control and it fell off the road.
The officer said that one person died instantly in the accident but other casualties are nursing injuries in Thika Level Five hospital.
A 7-year-boy is among the many nursing critical injuries in the hospital after being rescued by the Kenya Red Cross assistants.
The traffic police boss warned that a crackdown will be done immediately to ensure all unroadworthy vehicles are taken out of business and operators prosecuted.
"We regret the numerous accidents that have occurred this week but an immediate action will be taken by my officers to ensure we curb this worrying trend,” he said.
The traffic officer was accompanied by Kiambu County Roads executive Njeri Gatabaki who echoed his sentiments and urged drivers and all other road users to take caution on the roads.
