44 passengers were rescued from a bus that had been swept away by raging floods in Turkana County, with a female passenger who was injured during the incident is recuperating at  Lodwar County Hospital.

The Kitale-Lodwar Highway has been damaged by heavy rains that have been pounding the area, on Friday going to Saturday.

The incident, which happened early Saturday, saw the Kenya Red cross team and police from the area come to the rescue of the situation, after an emergency call was made.

The Eldoret Express bus had been swept off by the floods, with the RedCross team rescuing 14 adults and four children.

The female passenger who had internal injuries was referred to Lodwar Hospital, with the emergency team saying 26 passengers managed to evacuate on their own.

National Disaster Management Unit communication Director said strong currents made evacuating means difficult at first.

The team further says the locals need to be trained in order to avoid similar incidents.

“The bridge at Kainuk is broken, and can only carry light vehicles and is very dangerous,” he said as quoted by Nation.

The team is now warning the locals and other people using vehicles, motorbikes and motorcycles to be careful during this period when the rains are here.

Flash floods have severely affected the transport system in the area in the last couple of days.
