Despite the numerous pleas by Garissa Governor Nathif Jama to the government, the Garissa Passport Control Office in the county is yet to re-open.
The office which was shut down three years ago, has compelled residents to make frequent travels to Nairobi to acquire their passports, a process that has since inconvenienced among others Muslim faithfuls who intended to attend the annual pilgrimage in Mecca.
Services at the Immigration offices in Garissa were suspended in 2013 and officers ordered to immediately return unused passport processing booklets to the Nairobi headquarters.
At the time of closure, more than 700 people who had applied for the vital document in the county were forced to either give up on the process or head to the country's capital for further follow ups.
The governor alleges the then Immigration boss Gordon Kihalangwa made the closure orders illegally, noting that applicants were not issued with prior notice before the suspension of the services at the county level
