Addressing the press when he toured the site on Thursday, Matiang'i said investigations have been launched on why the dam burst and insisted that people should not 'come up with stories' but should wait for the probe to be concluded.

"We are engaged in investigations to find out what happened, to find out if it could have been avoided. It is not proper for Kenyans to speculate at this point about what happened," he said.

The CS added: "Let us focus on addressing the challenges being faced by affected families."

He also rubbished claims that the government did not respond in time after the disaster struck saying both levels of government have joined hands to prevent further losses.

"There is no confusion, no problem at all in coordinating disaster response. We did not lose time. County and national governments are working together," Matiang'i said.

This comes amid claims that the dam had started showing huge cracks that were leaking water before it broke its banks.

Kenyans have also taken to social media to point accusing finger at the government saying the disaster could have been prevented.

"Who approved the building of the Patel Dam? Who built it? Who oversaw the building of the dam? Were mechanisms to prevent such an accident put in place? Who oversaw this? Don't we enforce laws in this country?" posted blogger Robert Alai.
