Patients in two hospitals in Nairobi have sought for assistance from the county government following an incident where a sewer tunnel burst and sewage flowed into the health facilities.
Patients at Getrudes and Radiant Hospitals in Nairobi's Pangani area who spoke told journalists that it was the third time the Thursday incident was happening yet no interventions had been made to rectify the situation.
Sammy Oketch, a patient said: "I have been here for the last one week and I can't believe what I saw. Sewage flowing into a hospital. What is Nairobi County government doing?"
He said patients for the last three days have withstood the filth and the problem is spiraling out of hand as the burst sewer has not been unblocked.
Nairobi has been receiving heavy rains since March and some sewer pipes have burst due to huge amounts of rainwater that runs across the city.
Wangechi Nyambura, another patient said she fears patients at the health facilities may contract diseases as a result of the sewage flowing into patient wards.
"The hospitals' management can't do anything. It is the work of the county government to solve this. We now fear we may contract diseases as a result," she said.
By the time of the filing of this story, both the county government and the two hospitals' management had not spoken about the issue.
