Group of 60 Urogical surgeons from the Country have been conducting free surgeries using latest technology in Malindi for the last three days to assist poor patients suffering from long time urinal ailments. The experts are operating urinary stones, prostates, and kidney diseases, using the best technology available in the world.In the new technology patients do not undergo the traditional surgery process which requires one to be cut for the illness the be treated.Dr. James Ikol from Kenyatta National Hospital who was leading the team of Kenya Association of Urological surgeons said they brought specialist Urological services to Malindi as a way of giving back to the community.He said they have partnered with three hospitals in Malindi including Malindi Sub County hospital, Star hospital and Tawfiq hospital which offered the space to make the surgeries done and expected to complete 90 surgeries by end of today (Thursday).On Wednesday the team was a Star hospital which offered their three theatres and some of the facilities to ensure the process run smoothly.Dr. Ikol said they were treating people with specialized equipment and have partnered with some companies such as astherists and Olympus together with the three hospitals to offer the urological services.“What this technology has done is that we don’t have to cut you any more, we just use special machines put through channels which God himself created so we don’t cut you we just send our equipment through whatever space available in the urinary system that are within your body and we are able to reach your illness and then correct what is the problem,’’ he said.Dr. Ikol said the 60 specialists were from various hospitals among them Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, University of Nairobi, Aghakhan Hospital,Garissa hospital, Mandera and, Kisii.“Kenya Association of Urogical Surgeons is a grouping of Urologists in the country so we all come together and every February we take a week off ,we don’t work in our usual offices and we visit one institution,’’ he said.He said the technology being used by the experts was provided by a company called Olympus which has a system of melting the prostrate and helps doctors operate on the patient using high tech equipment but making the operation very affordable for the particular patient.“In our country there are many people who are going to India seeking treatment. Our advice is that we have specialists locally, hospitals which have capacity and equipment which can perform these specialized operations,’’ he said.In Malindi he said Urogical services can be done at Star hospital, Tawfiq and Malindi Sub county hospital adding that people should not suffer at home as there is enough expertise to treat any ailment they may have.He also advised residents of Malindi and Kilifi County At Large to take up the NHIF cover saying it simplifies payment of hospital bills and improves access to medical services.“We have noted that there are very many people here who are walking around with illness which they shouldn’t walk around with, seek medical advice because the expertise is available both locally in Malindi and other parts of the country,’’ said Dr. Ikol.Dr. Nurein Mohidin a general surgeon at Star hospital they had offered their three theaters so as to enable the surgeries be effected easily adding that there are more medical camps which are under way with one of them set for May 9 to May 12 this year. One of the beneficiaries Jefwa Yaa age 75 years had suffered for over five years with urinal illness. Mtawali Jefwa Yaa a son of the patient said his father had urinal problems but never wanted to reveal the illness to the family.“My father never wanted to disclose his illness for over one year until his urinal system blocked and he begun bleeding,’’ he said.He thanked the doctors for helping treat his father and the others who benefited from the free surgeries.
