Nyumba Kumi officials in Kisii County have called upon both the national and county governments to consider allocating funds to members of the initiatives to motivate them.
Speaking in a Kisii hotel, Nyumba Kumi officials led by their coordinator James Onyambu said while the government has rolled out the programme to all counties, lack of motivation to the members was hindering effective implementation of the programme at the grass root level.
He said the government needs to set up a special fund to pay a stipend to the community policing members as a way of motivating them.
The coordinator said the government needs to expand the training to cover bodaboda operators and commercial sex workers, who often have first-hand information about criminals.
“Bodaboda operators and commercial sex workers often come into contact with some of the criminal elements due to the nature of their work. We need to bring them on board and collaborate with them” he said.
Since the inception of the programme in August 2005, the government has mainly focused on training of the members, but there has been an outcry from members that they need to be given a monthly allowance as a motivation due to the nature of work.
