A peace and security Non-Governmental Organization has launched a peace and security campaign which will involve youth as peace ambassadors at the Coast.
The Kenya Community Support Centre-KECOSCE, a peace and security lobby based at the Coast said that since youth were the mostly misused lot in breaching peace and security in the region, they will be made ambassador of peace throughout the year.
Speaking in Mombasa on Saturday in a peace and security forum, the ‘Kenya Community Support Center Executive Director Phyllis Muema, said that youth were easily lured in causing conflicts since they were economic unstable.
Muema said that the youth should be fully involved in security and peace campaigns in the region so that the region remain peacefully even after 2017 August general elections and the 26th October Presidential rematch.
“We should stop accusing the youth for being misused by politicians to breach peace and security in the region but instead involve them in security and peace campaigns in the region,” added Muema.
She said that the organization has been working with youth in all the six counties at the Coast being Taita taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana river and Lamu.
“However we are now implementing peace and security programs in Garissa and Nairobi counties as well,” she said.
Muema said that peace campaigns should not wait until the country conducts general election but should be a continuous process involving the community and especially the youth.
Muema however, appealed to the youth at the Coast to deter from indulging in criminal activities or joining criminal or extremist gangs but instead focus on uplifting themselves economically.
