Speaking in his office on Friday, Kisii Central OCPD Tom Mutsya said the population growth in the town has led to increase of motorists hence he called for caution when using the roads.

“We have an increasing number of motorists in the town due to increasing population. This is quite dangerous for the pedestrians since most of them end up dying in road accident related cases. We must be extra careful when using the roads,” he said.

Mutsya said most accident related cases were directly associated with pedestrians who either miscalculated when crossing the road or who were deliberately knocked by motorists.

“Last week alone, seven pedestrians were critically injured and are recovering at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. They were reportedly trying to cross the road without taking necessary precautions,” he said.

The OCPD also warned reckless drivers against disobeying traffic rules besides announcing stiff measures to deal with them.

“It does not always mean that pedestrians are on the wrong. Drivers must also drive carefully to avoid causing unnecessary deaths. We will arrest whoever violates traffic rules and arraign them in court,” he said.

He said police officers were keen to ensure deaths resulting from pedestrian road usage were drastically reduced in Kisii town.
