People with disability in Bahati have been told to form local welfare groups for social and economic development. Speaking at Kiamaina Pentecostal Church yesterday during a sensitisation and registration of children and people with disabilities forum, National Council of People with Disabilities Nakuru branch secretary Philamon Ochando urged Bahati residents help identify people with disability and form welfare groups for them. “Such groups can help us and other stakeholders identify them. Many people with disabilities don’t want publicity thus they fail to benefit from stakeholders incentives,’’ said Ochando. According to Ochando, both the government and stakeholders are committed towards elevating the lives of people with disabilities in the country and called upon them and their associates to come out in the open for identification. United Nations International Children Education Fund (UNICEF) Official Agnes Muruku said Kenya was among top countries that benefit from UN programmes and urged Bahati residents to help identify needy children. She said the organisation was concerned about the social welfare of disabled children and young adults and that was why it was rolling out such programmes for data entry. “We appeal to local communities to help identify people with disabilities. We can help change their lives because there are no limitations in life while many programmes are in the offing to support them," said Muruku. The forum was organised by UNICEF and National Council of People with Disabilities.
