The county government of Mombasa is laying elaborate measures to ensure recurrent water shortages are halted.
Governor Hassan Joho on Thursday announced the devolved unit had dug boreholes in the Coastal town to address the problem.
"We have sunk five boreholes in rural Jomvu especially in areas that are hit by water shortages to provide accessibility of the precious commodity free of charge to the residents to supplement the current supply," he said as he launched the boreholes.
"We will continue to enhance infrastructural development especially in the outskirts of the Central Business District to improve connectivity of essential services and market access."
The launch of the boreholes is expected to reduce the distance residents of Jomvu walk in search for water.
Mombasa has for the last one year experienced a water shortage problem with residents blaming the national and county governments of failing to solve the issue that has been there for a long time.
The national government is expected to establish a water treatment plant in the town to boost water provision.
The problem has been persistent and the local leadership has been engaging in blame games over the issue.
In April, Nyali MP Hezron Awiti and Omar Mwinyi of Changamwe asked the county to reinstate the licences of water vendors it revoked in March 2016 to save locals from using unsafe water.
"People are now consuming water from unsafe sources because of the shortage that followed revocation of the licences," Mr Awiti said then.
"We will not just sit back and watch."
