People Living with Disabilities (PLWD) in Rongai have called on the Nakuru County government to help them improve their well-being.

Speaking on Thursday at Kambi Moto, Rongai Sub County during this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebrations, Alfred Mugo, the Chairman of Rongai Persons with Disabilities called on the county government to develop mechanisms to enhance their well-being.

“The county government has forgotten us in the running of the county. We are living in abject poverty,” said Mugo.

He urged the county government to ensure progressive implementation of the principle of at least five per cent of public posts are given to persons living with disabilities.

“We have our rights as enshrined in the constitution and we have equal rights like other members of society,” said Mugo.

Mugo urged the county government to increase its allocation of resources to support them especially braille and other means of communications.

“Most challenges we are facing is lack of braille machines and appropriate communications to our members,” said the chairman.

He further urged the national government to develop programmes that will improve their well-being.

Nancy Chebet who is visually impaired urged the society to be positive towards persons living with disabilities.

“The society should have a positive outlook to persons with disabilities. Persons living with disabilities face a lot of discrimination and stigmatization that deny us opportunities to realize our goals in life,” said Chebet.
