The government has been accused of selectively compensating the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who lost their property and relatives in the aftermath of the 2007/08 Post Election Violence (PEV).
According to a group of IDPs who assembled in Kisii county hall today, the government only focused on IDPs in camps and ignored the integrated ones who are currently hosted by their communities.
Led by one of them Daniel Omanga they said that the Gusii region was never considered for compensation because they went back to their communities while their counterparts from other regions who stayed in camps have benefited immensely from the government resources.
“We lost properties where we lived in other counties but so far we haven’t been compensated and we call for the government to ensure they help us” he added.
He cited that personally he lost property and eleven members of his family in Naivasha in the 2007/08 skirmishes.
“It seems the compensation was meant to benefit only IDPs who found themselves in camps," said Omanga.
"The government should know that there are those IDPs who are temporarily hosted by their communities and that does not disqualify them from being compensated," he added.
He urged the government to ensure that the PEV compensation file is not closed until all the integrated IDPs are identified and dully compensated.
