Victims of the 2007-08 post-election violence are crying foul over Tuesday's verdict of the ICC on Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang who were declared as to have; “no case to answer.”
The IDPs claim that justice has not been served to them as they were the ones who felt the brunt of the violence that rocked the country after the disputed 2007 elections.
“We know that the people who were taken to the ICC and charged were really not the ones behind the violence that left so many people dead. Unfortunately the victims will never receive any justice and the ones who perished are long forgotten,” said John Mwangi, an IDP, at Pipeline Camp.
In the same camp, Grace Waweru pointed out that many of the IDPs felt confident that court will force the suspects to pay for the crimes against humanity.
“They bullied their way out of ICC, with the help from other African countries. Our leaders selfishly wanted a way out and it’s a shame that they have walked scot free. In the end, we fear that in case such a thing occurred, no one will pay for it. Politicians were the ones who were behind the massacre and they are now the ones laughing and hugging each other,” she claimed.
Salim Muchiri prayed for a local tribunal to help in the getting of justice for the victims. “At least someone should have paid for the killings,” he added.
Josephine Waithera called for a nationwide peace and reconciliation process.
“Kenya has never healed. Its only plastic love that exists among us and unrealistic promises. People have never really sought for forgiveness among the people who wronged them and unfortunately it might breed more hatred,” he added.
