This has forced pregnant mothers to share beds.

“Our maternity wing has a total bed capacity of 500 but as we speak we are talking of 700 mothers occupying the ward and this is something we are working on to correct as soon as possible,” said Dr. Mburu. He said the current maternity wing is overstretched with between 30-40 new born babies arriving daily.

“In a single day we are talking of at least between 30-40 babies being born at PGH and that’s a huge number going by our capacity,” he said.Dr Mburu said the new one-stop-ultramodern maternity wing will be opened in July adding that 90% of the work has already been completed.According to Dr. Mburu, the opening of the new wing will not only reduce congestion but also enhance service delivery in the maternity wing. “With the new wing our aim is to reduce pressure on the current ward but we are also focusing on the enhancement of service delivery because our resolve as a hospital is to ensure our women who seek services at our maternity wing are given the best and most comfortable service,” he said.
