Security team in Nyamira County has confiscated a teacher’s cell phone for allegedly communicating 2017’s KCSE in what is seen as government’s intensified effort to curb exams cheating.
St. Patrick Kahawa Mixed Secondary School teacher in Borabu Sub County was nabbed by members of the team who had stumbled on the material suspected to resemble that of the on-going form four exams.
During a routine monitoring of the KCSE’s conduct, the team led by Nyamira County Commissioner Isaiah Nakoru picked out the teacher during a security check.
Nakoru said the team expected the teacher to explain why he was found in possession of the phone and the material, which are prohibited in schools while the exam was on.
Nakoru, however, clarified that it was too early to conclude the material was the same as that of the 2017 KCSE, adding it was yet to be downloaded.
He, however, termed the incident as an isolated one and that the national exercise proceeded smoothly, with the area security and directorate of education teams committed to ensure a credible exam was delivered.
This followed punitive measures preferred by Education ministry Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i against some teachers reportedly found to have abetted exam cheating or irregularities.
One private school in Nakuru has since been deregistered by the ministry over cheating allegations.
