A middle aged man who was escaping from an angry mob baying for his blood after snatching a hand bag from a business woman at Gilani estate in Nakuru town died on spot after he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle. Eye witnesses said that the incident that occurred at around noon caused a heavy traffic jam along Nakuru-Eldoret highway after traffic on the road that connects the estate road with the main road was blocked for almost one hour. Samuel Njuguna a motorcyclist operating near the scene of the accident said the unidentified man’s body was disfigured beyond recognition after he was knocked down by the matatu. “The pickpocket was running towards the estate’s inner lanes after snatching the woman’s handbag near Total Petrol Station. The woman is a local business person and she was coming out of her shop adjacent the petrol station when the man pounced on her and snatched the handbag,’’ said Njuguna. Another eye witness, Meshack Okoth, who works at the petrol station, said despite the pick pocket having died on the spot after being knocked down by the matatu that had just negotiated a roundabout, members of the public poured petrol on an old car tire and set his body on fire. “The businesswoman’s Sh 20,000 cash and a mobile phone worth Sh10,000 among other personal effects were recovered before police ferried the charred remains of the pickpocket away to Nakuru General Hospital Mortuary,” said Okoth.
