Naivasha Sub County public health officer Caroline Vata said rearing animals in densely populated estates is illegal. She also summoned others over the pig menace.

“There is no way the public health department in Naivasha will allow rearing of pigs in the town” she said.

She said that they had started driving the pigs and arresting the owners, mainly in Karagita estate, where they are very many.

“Let the owners of these pigs remove them or we shall move to action and arrest the culprits if they do not follow the law,” she stated.

At the same time, Vata said the department has warned several hotels and owners of residential houses over poor sanitation.

She said the buildings are discharging waste water and garbage in the street and put them on notice that there days are numbered before they are arrested and charge in court.

Elsewhere, efforts to improve sanitation within the sub county have started in earnest after public health staff were trained to enforce the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) strategy.

The strategy aims at taking communities away from an attitude of open defecation to one that uses basic latrines.

Naivasha Sub County Medical Officer of Health Dr Oren Ombiro said the campaign targets 84, 254 households with approximately 168, 509 people covering all the divisions in the area.

Speaking at Karagita grounds in a ceremony that was preceded by a road show dubbed Sanitation Marketing Campaign, Dr Ombiro said there was need for residents to be enlightened on the importance of safe disposal and management of their waste to prevent human exposure to environmental hazards.

The road show was sponsored through a grant from the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

He said that out of the 104 Open Defecation Free (ODF) claims in the sub-county, only 15 villages have been certified as ODF and that the campaigns would continue until the whole sub-county is declared ODF.
