Plans are at an advanced stage to expand the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway, Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) South Rift chairman Clarence Ouma has said.
Speaking to reporters in Nakuru, Ouma said that the expansion of the road will help ease traffic at the Gilgil weighbridge.
He said that a plan on the expansion has been completed and that construction works will begin soon.
Ouma indicated that the expansion would also reduce the number of accidents that often occur along the highway.
He attributed the high number of accidents to the fact the highway is used by long-distance trucks and other vehicles.
“Plans to have the Nairobi-Nakuru highway expanded are almost complete,” he said, adding that they are just waiting for assessment reports from several state agencies.
Ouma, however, decried that some roads in the county are in poor state as a result of overloading of trucks. He warned that action will be taken against those who overload their vehicles, especially sand harvesters.
The chairman asked sand harvesters in Mai-Mahiu to observe regulations and desist from overloading trucks.
“We want to warn that action will be taken against sand harvesters who overload trucks,” he said.
He said that KeNHA is working with county governments across the country to ensure roads and their infrastructures are in good condition in order to oversee socio-economic development.
