The county government of Kiambu has made plans to build a childrens' rehabilitation centre in Kamwangi after an increase of street urchins in the area.
Speaking in Gathuthu children’s home at Kamwangi on Saturday 28th November 2015, Nancy Mwangi the public service officer of Gatundu North sub county said that the county officials have been holding talks to deliberate on the issue.
"There are no county government funded rehabilitation centers in this area and it is very encouraging to see the county making strides in taking care of childrens' wellbeing by coming up with facilities in different areas of the county," she said.
"Street children are vulnerable to making mistakes without knowledge of the consequences that may follow after engaging in illegal activities in the streets and it’s our own responsibility to rectify this innocent minds before they get ruined forever," she added.
She reiterated that they will make efforts of making the children learn that they will not be held captive rather that they will be receiving knowledge and care in the rehabilitation that will lead to the betterment of their tomorrow.
"We will try very hard to make sure that stigmatisation does not affect street children," she said.
"We are planning to have different platforms to counter stigmatisation, the programmes we are about to initiate include vocational training in different educational fields such as, carpentry metal work, beauty courses and tailoring," she added.
