Kisii county boss James Ongwae has been asked to establish a soccer team to engage local talents.
Locals want Governor Ongwae to choose players from Kisii county to constitute a soccer team that will participate in national football tournaments.
They want the Kisii government to embrace such a project already initiated in Busia county and sponsored by Safaricom and a local politician.
"Ongwae's government should support local football like in Busia county which is in conjunction with Safaricom and a sponsoring politician," said Victor Gitogo a Menyinkwa resident in Kisii County.
According to Gitogo, such a project will help nurture talents of many youths, who may attract top football clubs in the country hence changing their livelihoods.
Another resident Franklin Omache has slammed local politicians for too much politicking that led to poor soccer standards in the region, resulting in the downfall of famed Shabana Fc.
"Gusii region ranks low in soccer standards because of politics. We were top when Shabana Fc was a football heavyweight that produced five players in the national team. But at the moment we don't have even a single Kisii player in the team.
We know Ongwae is a football fanatic and he needs to start and sponsor a winning team," he said.
Shabana Fc was once a football powerhouse from the region, who enjoyed some of the fiercest rivalries with Kenyan football giants including record winning Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia Fc.
