Former Nyeri Women Representative Priscillah Nyokabi had been called to the stage by new governor Mutahi Kahiga to greet mourners during a requiem mass for the late Governor Wahome Gakuru.
As she addressed the mourners, Nyokabi reminded the governor that she is jobless.
"I want to remind you that I'm jobless, so please give a job," she said.
Residents interpreted this as rooting for the position of deputy governor.
Kahiga has no deputy after he assumed the position of governor as the constitution is silent on what happens if a deputy governor takes over power.
