Life in Kibera slums is never easy as anyone may imagine, and specifically for the girls. Living in the slums is a nightmare especially without a job or any other reliable source of income. I have seen the slum girls and I know their fate and how it feels to hail from those poor conditions. Apparently, they are the most vulnerable of all slum dwellers.
Young and disadvantaged adolescents who grow up in the slums have very few opportunities in finding income-generating opportunities that will allow them to buy their basic necessities which parents cannot offer. As a result, these girls who are of age to be considered adults resort to using their bodies as means to acquire what they feel is missing for their comfort. It can be a sanitary towel that they cannot afford or even a good life they see their friends enjoying.
It is rightful thinking to conclude that these slum girls opt to trade in their bodies by availing services to clients who are mostly from the rich households in the city or even to those who live in the slum.
This is a disheartening trend that is happening in real life and needs immediate attention from all quarters. These teenage girls are not only predisposing themselves to the dangers of contracting diseases like HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections but they also risk terminating their lives due to self-hate and a feeling of worthlessness.
Something needs to be done.
