They said the ongoing drive to collect illegal weapons and arrest bandits has turned the area into the most dangerous place for human beings to live. They added that the suffering children and aged has nothing to do with banditry.

Joe Erote, student at JKUAT Nakuru campus from Pokot County said the operation is inhuman as shopping centres have been reduced to ashes. He accused security personnel for creating more problems in the area instead of restoring peace.

"How can you beat children and elderly pretending that you are searching for bandits?" he wondered.

Allan Kortok, a don at Egerton University said the operation will leave the area poorer and insecure than the way it was. He accused security personnel of using excessive force against innocent Pokots.

He said the government should send investigators to reveal the root cause of the problem instead of harassing the innocent women, children and the aged.

They said business and other daily activities have come to a standstill and families are suffering since their sources of livelihoods have been affected.
