Kisumu leaders led by Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili addressing the press after attending ant IEBC demonstrations.
Kisumu leaders on Monday faulted the police for breaking up a peaceful march along the streets to push for the removal of some IEBC officers ahead of polls slated for later this month.
Nyando MP Jared Okello said police should be guided by the Constitution and should not be seen as taking political sides.
He said the peaceful demonstration was within the law and police had no basis of interfering with them.
“It was wrong for police to throw teargas at us while we were peacefully demonstrating,” he said.
Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili wondered why police had to hurl teargas into the compound of learning institution.
He told the police to respect schools whenever they are dealing with demonstrators.
“I received a call from Kisumu Girls Principal that police are throwing teargas into the school compound raising fear among students and teachers,” he said.
However, Muhoroni MP Onyango Koyoo warned those turning up for demonstrators to desist from hooliganism.
Koyoo said some elements are out to use the demonstrations to pursue their criminal acts.
“Some criminals mingled with us and started throwing stones at the officers, I want to warn those criminals to keep off our demonstrations,” he said.
