Officers form the General Service Unit raped girls when police invaded the University of Nairobi on Thursday, a union at the university has said.
Police were deployed at the institution following student protests after former Students Organisation of Nairobi University Chairman and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was re-arrested.
University Academic Staff Union (UASU) on Saturday said girls reported by the body incidents in which GSU officers broke doors to female students’ hostels and raped girls.
“It’s very unfortunate that this happened to our students. We want these officers identified. When you do that to an innocent student, you wonder what life has become,” UASU said in a statement.
The Thursday police assault on University of Nairobi students attracted public outcry and condemnation by human rights activists and lawyers.
Video recordings of the police, believed to be drawn from the GSU, were widely shared on social media platforms.
The clips show the officers raiding students in their hostels, libraries and even lecture halls and beating them with riot batons.
UASU also reported that 15 students, two of them in critical condition are still in hospital following the assault.
