Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed has given police administrators a seven-day notice to beef up security in Old Town.
Speaking on Thursday during a security meeting that was attended by security officials and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir at Fort Jesus Grounds, Maalim said that police must ensure gangs in the area are dealt with.
"We do not want to hear cases of people being stabbed or robbed in Old Town. If the cases persist, whoever was given the responsibility to enhance security in the area will be held accountable," he added.
On his part, Mvita MP praised the government's effort in enhancing security in the area.
He said residents must denounce criminal organisations and work together with police for the sake of their own safety.
"We should shun crime the same way we do not tolerate police brutality," Nassir said.
He also urged parents to take their children to school in a bid to prevent them from joining criminal groups.
