Motorists using Kiambu-Nairobi Road have been cautioned to drive carefully as the road has been attracting many serious accidents recently.
Kiambu traffic base commander Mr Gabriel Muthee on Thursday said they are concerned with the increasing number of accidents witnessed on the road. Muthee noted that a majority of the accidents along the narrow road are caused by careless and over speeding motorists who often ignore basic traffic rules.
He noted that the number of fatalities on the road continues to rise daily as drivers continue to flout traffic rules.
“The road can be very dangerous especially during the night. It has a number of sharp curves and very steep slopes which are mostly ignored by some motorists,” he noted.
Mulei noted that overlapping and picking and dropping of passengers in the middle of the road by matatus has become the order of the day along this road.
“Thindigua, Ridgeways, Runda, by-pass and areas within Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) have been noted to be the hotspots of such acts and quite a number of accidents have been reported in those places. We have, therefore, ensured these areas are under proper traffic surveillance to ensure these deeds come to an end,” he said.
The traffic boss also warned errant motorists against speeding during rush hours. He said culpable drivers will be prosecuted for careless driving and endangering the lives of both passengers and pedestrians.
On the other hand, he also appealed to pedestrians to observe traffic laws since cases of pedestrians being hit by vehicles have gone up as well.
Mulei urged motorists to strictly ensure adherence to the traffic rules. “This way, the levels of road accidents occurring in Kenya will definitely reduce with time,” he concluded.
