Opposition Orange Democratic Movement party supporters in Kisumu will hold a peaceful demonstration on Monday in the lakeside city to denounce threats directed at arresting party leader Raila Odinga.

Kisumu County ODM chairman Dave Okwatch said they have obtained a police permit to go ahead with the demonstration.

Mr Okwatch said the 9am event will kick off at Kondele and proceed into the Central Business District to show solidarity with Mr Odinga.

“We will be peaceful and that is why police have legalised our demonstration,” he said.

Speaking in Kisumu on Saturday during the celebrations to mark Jamhuri Day, Okwatch said investigating arms of the government should do their work and stop intimidating Odinga over the Eurobond saga.

Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir urged the party supporters to carry themselves with decorum during the demonstration.

Mr Shabbir called on the police to refrain from using force during the demonstration that is lawful.

“We do not want bloodshed in Kisumu,” he said.

However, Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata said police will be present during the demonstration to ensure it is not violent.

Mr Elungata said that as long as the demonstrators do not interfere with businesses of the locals, police will not meddle into their affairs.

“We are not politicians, our work is to ensure law and order. Police will be present to ensure peace and tranquility in the city on Monday,” he said.
