Nyanza Regional Coordinator Wilson Njenga has defended the police from allegations that they are using excess force in the management of post-election demos.

Njenga said the police were doing what they were mandated to as a way of safeguarding citizen’s lives and property.

Reacting to Njenga’s statements to in Kisumu, Prof Anyang' Nyong'o , the Kisumu County Governor elect stated that police were using live bullets and excessive force to disenfranchise citizens from demonstrating peacefully.

"We have gathered spent cartridges from the affected areas and this is a clear indicator that live bullets were used," he said.

He revealed that about four people were currently admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) with injuries after their encounter with police.

Nyong’o said that there was rife of fear and that a number of people had been killed by the officers.

Among the hardest hit by violence areas are: Kondele, car wash, Obunga, Kisian, Nyamasaria and Nyalenda.

The governor elect called on his followers to demonstrate peacefully and stay out of harm's way adding that NASA coalition was planning to make a statement on the way forward.

"There is a standoff and we cannot assume that all is well. We intend to give a way forward on this matter. We want to warrant that every vote cast counts and that there is no doctoring," he said.
